Sheridan's Ride
Director:
Year: 1908
Plot: During the stirring times of 1864, the Unionists were bent on destroying the Confederate capitol at Richmond, while the opposing force were equally determined to attack Washington. In July, General Early started with 20,000 cavalry to take Washington. He came within sight of the city, then turned into the Shenandoah Valley. General Sheridan was sent to attack him. They met at Winchester on September 19, where the Confederate army was put to rout. Early was quickly reinforced, and during Sheridan's temporary absence surprised the Union army at Cedar Creek on October 19 and drove it back in confusion, Early's attack was made under cover of a dense fog and the darkness of early morning. General Wright, in command of the Union army, although wounded on the field, got his troops into a new position about seven miles in the rear. Sheridan heard the cannonading at "Winchester, 20 miles away," and realizing the importance of his presence, put spurs to his "coal black steed," and never drew rein until he dashed to the front of his retreating troops. As he passed the fugitives along the road he shouted, "Turn, boys, turn; we're going back." Under the magnetism of his presence, the men followed him back to the fight and to victory. A magnificent war picture.—Moving Picture World synopsis
