Plot: When Nurse Rios refuses his request to see Steve, Dan becomes upset and begs her. At the hospital formal party, Matt confides in John about Maggie's recent sudden outbursts of anger. Steve receives a call from Nurse Rios and agrees to visit Dan. Dr. Hendryx deems Nick's manners insufferable then starts in on Matt about Mike's unreliability. John finds Althea chatting with Nick, and when he whisks her away to dance, she jokes that he's being possessive. Althea theorizes that John thinks she uses comments about Jessica as a weapon against him. Steve arrives at Dan's hospital room. Nick declines Maggie's suggestion that she use the relaxed mood of the party to talk with Matt. Maggie is curious when Althea questions her about whether or not she talked about her ex-husband Kurt with Matt. Althea admits that every time she speaks of Jessica, it touches a nerve in John that causes him to shut down. Before she leaves Steve alone with Dan, Nurse Rios sets the cardiac alarm monitor. Dan pretends that he has accepted losing Carolee to Steve and declares that once he's released from the hospital, he'll give Carolee her freedom. At first Steve doesn't believe him, but eventually Dan convinces him that he'll do anything it takes to live. Before Steve goes, Dan persuades him to change the bottle of vasopressor and not send Nurse Rios back in since he needs rest. After Steve has left, Dan smirks that Steve bought it all, but he forgot to ask the price. His arm outstretched, he reaches upward to shut off the cardiac monitor alarm.—Skip Eastport
