Plot: Picture a fond mother, with babe in arms, thrown upon the world by a grasping landlord whose demands for the rent of her humble home cannot be met, and you have the pathetic introduction to a story which runs the entire gamut of human emotion in its telling. Follow this mother through her endless search for food and employment until every vestige of hope is gone and she turns to the sea for a haven of rest and peace, then witness the timely dropping of a telegram by a messenger who passes on horseback, and you see her glad smile as she reads its contents. A determination to live on takes the place of despair, and she struggles on, impelled by the telegram, until she reaches Fort McHenry. There, leaving her baby on the doorstep of Major Vance's quarters, with the missive pinned to its shawl, she finally takes up her cross alone, with ultimate success. After two and a half years, the baby is now the pride of the fort and the mother a successful novelist. The latter, spurred on by months of yearning for her loved one, induces her employer to journey with her to the fort and assist in reclaiming her child. Military maneuvers are in progress as they arrive, and a hurried search is made for the little one, only to find her in the keeping of a nurse, laughing with glee as the gallant soldiers march by and salute. The mother, mad with joy, cannot understand why they hurry the child away and refuse to allow her a mother's kiss and embrace. The fort is thrown into confusion on hearing her story, and both officers and men refuse to give up their pride and joy, until the Major and his wife sadly consent to a separation for the sake of a mother's longing for her own, and the final farewell is spoken with a hearty, "God bless and keep you."—Moving Picture World synopsis
